Job Description Templates: 6 Ready-to-Use Examples (Free, 2026)
A good job description has seven parts in this order: job title, a two-line summary of the role, what the person will do, what they need (split into must-haves and nice-to-haves), salary and location, benefits, and how to apply. Keep it under 600 words, put the salary in, and limit the must-haves to three to five things you would genuinely reject someone for not having. Below is that structure as a blank template, followed by six filled-in examples you can copy and edit. If you would rather generate one from a few details, the free AI job description generator writes a first draft in seconds.
The blank template
Job title: Use the title people actually search for. "Customer Support Advisor" beats "Customer Happiness Ninja".
About the role (2 to 3 sentences): What the job is, who it reports to, and why it exists now.
What you'll do: 5 to 7 bullet points, written as outcomes, not chores.
What you'll need (must-haves): 3 to 5 bullet points. Only things you would reject a CV for.
Nice to have: 2 to 4 bullet points that would make a candidate stand out.
Salary, location and hours: The range, where the work happens (office, hybrid, remote) and the working pattern.
Benefits: The ones that matter: holiday, pension, flexible hours, training budget.
How to apply: What to send, the closing date, and what happens next.

Mistakes that attract the wrong applicants
- Too many must-haves. Eight requirements filter out good people and still let weak ones apply. Keep it to the few you would actually reject on.
- No salary. Adverts without a salary get fewer and less relevant applicants, and candidates drop out late when the number is wrong.
- Internal job titles. Nobody searches for your org-chart name. Use the common market title.
- A wall of duties. Five to seven outcomes tell candidates more than twenty tasks.
- Biased wording. Phrases like "young and energetic" or "native English speaker" can breach the Equality Act 2010. Describe the skill instead ("fluent written English").
Make your job description work for screening
A clear job description also makes screening faster, whether a person or an AI tool is doing it. When must-haves are explicit, every CV can be checked against the same list. Our guide on writing a job description for AI screening explains how to structure requirements so they score cleanly, and the resume screening checklist turns them into a review sheet for your panel.
