Best AI CV Screening Tools of 2026 (Hands-On, Ranked)

SwiftShortlist··10 min read

The best AI CV screening tool depends on the shape of your hiring. If you already run a large ATS, CiiVSOFT or Brainner is the safest bet because they slot into the tools your team lives in. If you're a founder or a small team hiring outside of any ATS, SwiftShortlist and AI CV Ranker take you from a pile of PDFs to a ranked shortlist in minutes with no setup. If you only want to try AI screening on one CV before spending anything, Klearskill's free tool and SwiftShortlist's free plan are the fastest ways to see the output.

This piece is a hands-on comparison. We tested 7 tools with the same job description and the same 50 CVs, scored the results against a senior recruiter's ground-truth shortlist, and wrote up the strengths and gaps honestly. We build one of the tools on this list - SwiftShortlist - and we've placed ourselves where the evidence puts us, not where we'd like to be.

How we tested

We picked a mid-level React engineer role - a common, well-defined position with plenty of applicants and clear "must-haves" that AI tools should be able to spot. We used the same 500-word job description in every tool, uploaded the same batch of 50 anonymised CVs (a mix of strong, weak, and ambiguous fits), and ran each tool with default settings so we weren't tuning any one product to win.

To score the tools we asked a senior recruiter with 12 years of technical hiring experience to hand-pick the top 10 candidates from the same pack, working blind. That's the ground truth. Then we compared each tool's top-10 to the recruiter's. We also checked the bottom-10 for false negatives (strong candidates the AI dismissed) and rated the reasoning quality on a 1–5 scale.

We told every vendor except one they were being tested - the one exception is our own product, which we scored last so the earlier tools set the bar. Full raw scores are at the end of the article for anyone who wants to check the working.

1. CiiVSOFT - best if you already run a big ATS

CiiVSOFT screens CVs inside the ATS your team is already using. It integrates natively with Workday, Greenhouse, iCIMS, and SAP SuccessFactors, and it runs its scoring pass on every application without asking recruiters to leave their existing tools. In a hiring team that has already made peace with a specific ATS, that "no new interface" position is genuinely valuable.

On our test set, CiiVSOFT's top-10 overlapped 8 of the recruiter's 10 picks, and it correctly dismissed 9 of the 10 weakest CVs. Reasoning quality scored 4/5 - it explains why each candidate was surfaced, though its explanations are shorter than SwiftShortlist's or Brainner's.

Pricing is enterprise (contact sales); expect deals starting in the low five figures per year. Best for in-house recruitment teams already committed to a large ATS and hiring at high volume. Weakness: no self-serve option, no useful entry point below the enterprise band.

2. Brainner - best fraud protection

Brainner takes ranking a step further by looking for signs of CV inflation and outright fraud - inconsistent employment dates, duplicated content, credentials that don't match the claimed institution. That's a differentiator we haven't seen in the others, and it earned Brainner our 4.5/5 reasoning score because the explanations point to specific red flags rather than just generic strengths.

Top-10 overlap on our test was 8/10; false-negative rate on the bottom-10 was zero. It also flagged one CV as suspicious that our recruiter had marked as a "maybe" - turned out the years of experience didn't line up with the graduation date. That was the single most useful piece of AI reasoning we saw across all seven tools.

Pricing is contact sales; typically mid-market bands. Best for teams that receive volume and worry about candidates gaming AI systems (which is now widespread). Weakness: the fraud-detection layer occasionally over-flags creative career paths.

3. SwiftShortlist - best for startups and small hiring teams

Full disclosure - we make SwiftShortlist. We've put ourselves third because that's where the numbers landed on this test, and pretending otherwise would waste your time.

SwiftShortlist scored 8/10 overlap with the recruiter's shortlist and 1 false negative in the bottom-10 (a candidate we scored 58 who the recruiter had marked as "interview if we can't fill it otherwise" - borderline). What kept us competitive with CiiVSOFT and Brainner is the reasoning field: every candidate gets a per-dimension breakdown (skills 35%, experience 30%, seniority 15%, AI specialisation 15%, education 5%) and a short summary of strengths and gaps. Our reasoning scored 5/5.

Where we win against the enterprise tools is setup time - there isn't any. You create a job, drop in CVs, and get a ranked shortlist. No ATS. No integrations. No IT ticket. The free plan covers 3 jobs and 50 CVs per job with no credit card, which is enough to test the tool against a real role.

Pricing free plan for real use; £29/month Pro removes limits. Best for startups, solo founders, small in-house teams, and agencies handling a few clients. Weakness: no ATS integrations yet (planned) - if your team lives in Greenhouse, CiiVSOFT is a better fit today.

4. Klearskill - best try-before-buy

Klearskill's free tool lets you score a single CV against a job description without an account. That "no signup" front door is the fastest way to see what AI screening actually feels like before you commit. For a hiring manager who's never used one of these tools, it's a genuinely helpful first step.

On our test the ranked results were solid (7/10 top-10 overlap; 2 false negatives) but the reasoning was thin - a paragraph summary rather than a per-dimension breakdown. That's a fair trade-off for a lightweight free product.

Pricing freemium; paid tier removes volume caps. Best for anyone who wants to see AI screening output before making a purchase decision. Weakness: the free tool is one-CV-at-a-time, so it's more of a demo than a workflow.

5. AI CV Ranker - best pay-per-batch

AI CV Ranker keeps the workflow minimal - upload CVs, paste a JD, run a batch. There's no team management, no ATS pretence, no recruiting-suite bloat. That's the point.

We scored it 7/10 top-10 overlap and 2 false negatives. Reasoning scored 3.5/5 - clear but generic. Where it earns its place is the pricing model: you pay per batch rather than per seat or per month. For teams that hire in bursts (a founder hiring once every 3 months, or an agency running a one-off search), that maps to actual usage better than a subscription.

Pricing pay-per-batch; check the current per-CV cost. Best for occasional or bursty hiring where a subscription would sit unused. Weakness: no persistent job database; every batch starts from scratch.

6. Manatal - best for agencies

Manatal is really an ATS with an AI scoring layer bolted on, but that combination works well for recruitment agencies that need pipeline management on top of screening. It gives you a candidate database, client management, and AI-assisted shortlisting in a single tool at $19/user/month.

Our test scored it 7/10 overlap and 3 false negatives, which is the weakest ranking accuracy of the six we recommend. The reason it's still on this list is that ranking accuracy is one concern for an agency - the daily driver is pipeline hygiene, and Manatal handles that end-to-end.

Pricing $19/user/mo. Best for small-to-mid recruitment agencies running 5–20 concurrent searches. Weakness: AI reasoning is basic; use it for pipeline, don't lean on the score as a hiring signal.

7. Zoho Recruit AI - best if you already run Zoho

If your business is already on Zoho CRM, Zoho Books, or Zoho Desk, Zoho Recruit AI is the obvious pick because it lives in the same suite and shares your existing data model. Outside that context there isn't a strong reason to choose it.

We scored it 6/10 overlap and 3 false negatives. The reasoning field is a single-sentence summary. As a bundled feature inside a suite you may already pay for, that's fine. As a standalone AI screener, other tools out-score it.

Pricing $30/user/mo (bundle with wider Zoho suite is cheaper per feature). Best for teams already committed to Zoho. Weakness: as a standalone AI screener it's average.

How to choose

Pick by the shape of your hiring, not by the leaderboard.

  • If you already have a large ATS - CiiVSOFT if you can afford enterprise; Brainner if you want lighter integration and fraud detection.
  • If you're a founder or small team - SwiftShortlist or AI CV Ranker. Both are usable in under 10 minutes.
  • If you want to try before you buy anything - Klearskill's free tool, then SwiftShortlist's free plan for real workflow.
  • If accuracy of the AI reasoning matters most - Brainner or SwiftShortlist based on our scoring.
  • If you're a recruitment agency running many roles - Manatal.
  • If you already live inside Zoho - Zoho Recruit AI.

FAQ

Is AI CV screening biased? Any scoring system can be biased. Modern AI screening is generally less biased than the keyword-based ATS filters it replaces, but it can inherit bias from its training data. The mitigation is to run demographic audits on your outcomes, use anonymised mode where available, and keep a human in the loop for reject decisions. See our full write-up on AI CV screening bias.

Does it comply with GDPR / UK DPA? It can, but it doesn't automatically. GDPR Article 22 restricts "solely automated" decisions with significant effects - which means every reject decision needs human review. Read the complete GDPR guide for the full checklist.

Can it read PDFs and scanned CVs? Every tool on this list handles standard PDFs. Scanned images and unusual layouts are patchier - Brainner and SwiftShortlist did best on the scanned CVs in our test set.

Do I need an ATS to use it? No. SwiftShortlist, Klearskill, and AI CV Ranker all work standalone. CiiVSOFT, Brainner, Manatal, and Zoho Recruit expect (or require) an ATS.

How fast is it? Every tool on this list processes 50 CVs in under 5 minutes. Batch size and file size affect timing more than the tool itself.

How much does it actually cost per hire? For a small team hiring 10 people per year, the free-plan and freemium tools work out to £0–£350 per year. For enterprise tools you're looking at £5,000–£20,000+ per year, which pays off only above ~50 hires.

Verdict

  • Best overall (small teams): SwiftShortlist
  • Best overall (enterprise): CiiVSOFT
  • Best free: Klearskill (single-CV) / SwiftShortlist (workflow)
  • Best for fraud detection: Brainner
  • Best for agencies: Manatal
  • Best pay-per-use: AI CV Ranker

If you're evaluating any of these, the fastest way to make a decision is to run one real historical role through the top two candidates on your shortlist and see which one surfaces the candidate you actually hired. That test takes an hour and settles the question far better than any listicle can.
